Death By Cross Stitch

A little something else that I have been working on today.  Well it isn’t so little but it isn’t full coverage and it’s only stitched in one colour.  Yes, that’s right.  Me stitching a single colour project.  Death By Cross Stitch from Long Dog Samplers celebrates 20 years of Long Dog Samplers but they’re something that I’ve only recently discovered.  I’ve also discovered a new love for stitching these motifs.

I was mostly stitching this piece on Wednesday evenings but since finishing Wherefore Art Thou I decided to move it to my weekend stitching time and this past weekend managed to finish the first page (of 16).  Because I’m trying to complete motif areas I’ve also stitched on pages 2 and 5.  My thread isn’t so variegated that it would be noticeable where the page finished but I get into a method for stitching each part that it makes more sense to finish it rather than cut off partway.

I’m stitching 1 strand over 2 threads of 40 count Newcastle linen.  The thread I’m using is a silk thread from Paint Box Threads and the colour is SB10 and I really like how it’s turning out.  I have a few more samplers lined up to stitch after this one.

    Hi Nikki,

I didnt know how else ro carch you so im writing here. I hope you see this.

Im getting into lds too but im having trouble calculating the aMount of silk thread to use.

On the Dbcs chart it states that 370 meters of 6 ply thread is suffi cient for 32 ct. linen using 2 strands for criss stitch .
That would be 4 skeins of 100 meters each from paintbox

How come you need so many skeins? Even with a tinier ct. fabric and youre usung 1 strand.

I ask fOr your advice about hOw many skeins of 100 MeTers to use with 32 ct. and the dbcs desigN.

    I thank you, nikki.

    Regards,

    Barbara

      Hi Barbara
The Paintbox Silk Thread skeins are a single strand thread so you get 100 metres of on strand. The DBCS instructions say 370 metres of 6 ply thread (as you would normally get with DMC) and with 32 count you would need to use 2 strands of thread so instead of 370 metres of six strand thread you need 1,110 metres of thread in total (370×3). For the silk that works out at 11 and a bit skeins of 100 metre single stranded thread, I added in a few extra skeins because as it is a hand dyed thread if I needed more then I would be very unlikely to get exactly the same colour so I didn’t want to spend the whole project worrying that I didn’t have enough thread.
